The opening concert of 2023 Jeonju International Sori Festival titled <Co-existence & Resilience) shows “K-musics” that embrace the virtues within Eastern and Western musics together. The performance’s title is same as the main theme of the festival of this year. The concert will convey the messages that we will overcome globally-faced hardships through music (and festival), that we will harmonize different genres including world music and Western classical music, and that we will restore the festivity of musical events, the originality of traditional musics, and the artistry of performances within this first face-to-face festival held in the post-coronavirus situation.
Jeonju Symphony Orchestra representing Jeollabuk-do province and several great musicians including Moon Yangsuk (gayageum player), Ko Yeongyeol and Kim Yulhee (pansori performers), Kim Gihun (Baritone) and Seo Seonyeong (Soprano) will perform at this opening concert. In addition, under the purpose of “accepting Western-style orchestral form in a Korean way,” several pieces composed by Lee Geonyong, Choi Wujeong, Kim Seongguk and An Hyoyeong will be premiered or performed in their revised or rearranged forms.
There are several possibilities in terms of the reception, development and change of Korean traditional music in contemporary ways – preserving traditional forms, combining different contemporary genres, redefining artistic meanings, and et cetera. The Sori festival hopes to create a scene on which all these attempts are welcomed and applauded. It is hoped that our festival offers a venue where various kinds of musics together will be joyfully received to our lives as “our” musics of “now.”
