Master Sin Yeonghui’s voice of straightforwardness, clearness and thickness shows what people generally think about pansori’s attractive points. Her powerful ballim (bodily gestures) and charismatic acting style hold the whole stage and make people absorbed in performance. Lee Bohyeong, a musicologist, told that her profound voice “like a huge mountain” is a “prestige” one. Her’s Chunhyang-ga is the one of Manjeong style, which is Master Kim Sohee had rewritten based on Kim Sejong style (from Dongpyeon, i.e., east-side style) and Jeong Jeongryeol style (from Seopyeon, or west-side style). This style features its neatness and refinedness.
On the festival stage, the original five-hour performance is abbreviated to a three-hour one. With Master Sin Yeonghui, her two beloved students, Han Areum and Jo Suhwang, will perform together. It will be a great opportunity to see Master Kim Cheongman’s and Kim Gyuhyeong’s buk playing as well.
