Master's Pansori
Gansan Style Simcheong-ga by Master Jo Sanghyeon
Sept. 23 (Sat) 15:00 | Annex of Jeonju Dongheon House | Over 8 years | VIP : 100,000 won, R : 50,000 won
Master Jo Sanghyeon is hard on himself. Instead of saying that he is a good performer of sori, he just says that he has polished his sori for a long time. Because he thinks that sori should be practiced for three decades at least, and thus he keeps training himself hitherto. In thinking Boseongsori (lit. Pansori style originated from Boseong), he put weights more on musicality than theatricality. Also, he thinks that Boseongsori is an old style constructed through the combination of east-side and west-side styles. According to him, it focuses more on elegance with simplicity than on splendid technique, and more emphasizes moderation than exaggeration, highlighting the realism in terms of timbre as well as expressivity.
For recent years, Master Jo Sanghyeon only offered tomaksori (partial pieces) and danga (short songs independent from five traditionally-succeeded stories) to the general audience. Having his philosophy that pansori is not just a singing but a synthetic art using the whole human body, he hardly accepts performance-requests especially in the situation in which he cannot devote himself into a long-time preparation process. It is because he is not satisfied with his skillfulness compared to the past days when he was in his best conditions. In this sense, this festival stage will be a special opportunity to watch his performance done after his thorough practices for preparation. Master Ju Soyeon, a great successor of Jo Sanghyeon’s style, will also sing on this stage, and Master Park Siyang and Yim Yeongil will perform buk for the performance.
