Sinawi, Dance, and Ssitgim

Lee Taebaek, a master of Namdo (lit. southern region) music who is a musical successor of Master Park Byeongcheon, offers a synthetic art stage of playing, singing, and dance on which he recreates through collecting and arranging the essences of several folk music genres based on muga (lit. shamanistic song) and muak (shamanistic instrumental music) from the Jindo region for 2023 Jeonju International Sori Festival.

The festival performance begins with “gueum sinawi” (i.e., sinawi led by oral sound) that reminds of gueum salpuri that had been performed by Park Byeongcheon, a legendary figure of 20th century traditional music scene. In the climax part, Kang Eunyeong, a student of Park Byeongcheon, will perform “Jindo bukchum (lit. dance with buk)” with Lee Taebaek’s kkwaenggwari and Lee Yonggu’s taepyeongso. The stage ends with the highlight of Jindo ssitgimgut, a prototypical form of Namdo sinawi, i.e., “gildaggeum” (lit. polishing one’s way) performance.
