“Gangneung Danoje Danogut,” in the whole Danoje festival (i.e., the festival on the fifth day of the fifth month according to the lunar calendar), plays a core part that reflects popular beliefs. The accompaniment music for munyeo’s (female shamans’) singing and dancing in Danogut consists of a bundle of complicated rhythmic patterns, or jangdan. All rituals begin with shamans’ dance accompanied by a pattern named puneori. The rhythmic patterns for Danogut are based on cheongbo and jemasu patterns. Cheongbo jangdan includes five different patterns. When a pattern is changed to another, shaman’s song and dance become changed as well. While shamans are singing, instrumentalists are doing baraji (lit. supporting) through their high-note voices. The harmonization between percussive music, shamans’ singing and dance, and instrumentalists’ voice co-creates a very unique form of music.
