Lee Jaram's Pansori <The Old Man and the Sea>

Lee Jaram, a pansori composer and performer who has been showing <Sacheon-ga>, <Eokcheok-ga>, <Stranger’s Song>, and <An Ugly Thing/Murder> for domestic and international audiences, visits 2023 Jeonju International Sori Festival. Her <The Old Man and the Sea> is a recreation of Ernest Hemingway’s novel. In this recreation, she brings the novelist’s saltless, hard-boiled writing style into the grammar of traditional pansori, only using her vocal sound with a buk’s support.
The story of an old Cuban fisher, Santiago, becomes the story of “us,” and thereby the original text becomes connected to universal truths about our lives. Following Lee Jaram’s absorbing performance full of imaginative powers, the audience will meet Santiago on a small boat sailing nearby the Gulf of Mexico, and feel the sunlight and salty taste from there.
