“The Greatest Mask,” a union of young artists who have created new performances based on talchum (mask-dance) genres, shows <Othello and Iago> on which Shakespeare’s <Othello> and Korean traditional talchum meets together.
Through talchum’s exaggerative style of expressions, this performance depicts the process in which the once solid love between Othello and Desdemona becomes collapsed by Iago’s totally-light word. In addition, respective characters’ behaviors become choreographically recreated and then harmonized with the space, lights, and sounds of stage, all of which together construct a form of spectacle that maximizes emotional feelings generated and expressed from bodily movements. Also, the performance suggests another theme – thinking about hiding not only facial expressions but also ones’ minds behind masks. This destruction-reconstruction-recreation of mask dance of this performance will totally attract the audience.
This performance is prepared as a barrier-free one. Sign language interpretation with the synchronization in terms of bodily movement, text-based translation as well as audio description will be offered for more people’s joyful appreciation of performance.
