Korea's beloved folk song Arirang meets the Mazurka of Poland's legendary composer Frédéric Chopin, bringing together two musical traditions that transcend national borders. This collaboration grew from a shared appreciation of Korea's Arirang, inscribed on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, and the Mazurka, a folk dance deeply embedded in the cultural identity of Poland.
The project features six Korean musicians—including Lee Hang-yun (daegeum) and Wi Eun-young (geomungo), principal members of the Jeonbuk State Gugak Center—alongside four distinguished Polish musicians led by renowned early music specialist Prof. Maria Pomianowska. Since its premiere in 2014, the production has toured Korea and Poland over four years, creating memorable performances that celebrate cultural exchange through music.
To commemorate the 25th Jeonju International Sori Festival, <Chopin & Arirang>, one of the festival's most celebrated Korean traditional music and world music collaborations, returns to the stage. This special performance reflects on the festival's artistic legacy while reaffirming the enduring value of international collaboration. Experience the beauty of two musical traditions reunited in a performance that captures the true spirit of world music.
