Night of Sanjo
The 2026 Night of Sanjo brings together two of Korea's foremost masters: Park Daeseong and Park Beomhun. For many years, the Jeonju International Sori Festival has hoped to present these two distinguished artists on the same stage.
Master Park Daeseong, a descendant of the renowned artistic lineage of Park Jong-gi, demonstrated exceptional musical talent from an early age and inherited the musical tradition of his teacher, Han Il-seop. Drawing upon the aesthetics of Women's Gukgeuk and the emotional depth of the gyemyeonjo mode, Han Il-seop developed a Sanjo style characterized by balance and moderation rather than emphasis on any single expressive element. The Park Daeseong Ajaeng Sanjo embraces a wide spectrum of emotions while maintaining a harmonious artistic balance. Particularly notable is the clarity and restraint of Park's interpretation. Although the ajaeng naturally lends itself to emotional expression, Park Daeseong carefully controls excessive sentiment, creating a deeply reflective and contemplative style of Sanjo. His music embodies strength and perseverance while also revealing remarkable delicacy and warmth.
The Park Beomhun Piri Sanjo traces its roots to the tradition of Ji Yeong-hui. A disciple of Han Seong-jun, Ji Yeong-hui served as an assistant when Han founded the Joseon Music and Dance Research Institute. Following Korea's liberation, he established the Ji Yeong-hui Dance Research Institute, where he composed and developed numerous dance and instrumental works rooted in the Gyeonggi musical tradition. Among Ji Yeong-hui's most distinguished disciples is Park Beomhun. His Piri Sanjo is admired not only for its refined performance techniques but also for its sophisticated compositional structure. Expanding the expressive possibilities of the piri beyond its conventional range through diverse playing techniques, it creates a vibrant and dynamic musical landscape filled with brightness, vitality, and an affirmative spirit of life.
