Gangneung Danogut
The Gangneung Danoje Preservation Society is the organization responsible for preserving and presenting Gangneung Danoje, a tradition inscribed as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity and designated as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage of Korea. Building upon the festival's core traditions—including ancestral rites, Danogut, and the Gwanno Mask Drama—the society continues to safeguard and promote this millennium-old cultural heritage.
Presented in this performance, <Gangneung Danogut> is a distinctive folk ritual that combines intricate percussion rhythms with the dance and songs of the mudang (female shaman). Rich in musical complexity, it is renowned for its sophisticated rhythmic structures and dynamic ritual performance.
The program consists of three parts: Bujeonggut, a purification ritual that cleanses the performance space; Chugwongut, a ritual offering prayers for peace and well-being; and Deureonggaengi, a dazzling display of virtuosic percussion. The music of Danogut is distinguished by its continual variations of rhythmic patterns such as Puneri, Cheongbo, and Jemasu.
A particular highlight is the dynamic interplay between the mudang's expressive singing and dance and the musicians' spirited Baraji—high-pitched vocal exclamations that heighten the excitement of the performance. Together, the percussion, ritual songs, and vocal calls create a compelling musical experience that vividly conveys the vitality of Korea's traditional performing arts and the unique artistry of Gut music.
