International Residency Program [Asia SORI Project 2019]

 

Jeonju Int'l Sori Festival Organizing Committee offers an international artist-in-residence program [Asia SORI Project 2019] for Asian traditional musicians as a part of Cultural Partnership Initiative(CPI).


[Asia SORI Project 2019] is the international artist residency program in Jeonju, Jeollabuk-do of South Korea for Asia traditional musician. It hosted and organized by Jeonju Int'l Sori Festival Organizing committee.


The program aims to encourage the Asian musicians' collaboration and to lighten Asia's tradition's today and the future. The selected artist will participate in four months residence program to co-produce the new collaboration performance. They will be a member of festival ensemble [Asia SORI Project 2019] and premiere the new production at Jeonju Int'l Sori Festival in this October.


Jeonju Int’l Sori Festival will provide the studio, accommodations, expenses for research and co-work, and the support help in the development of the program. All program will be at Jeonju was known as the most Korean city and the heart of traditional music of Korea.

This project supported by Korean Foundation for International Cultural Exchange(KOFICE) and the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism of the Republic of Korea.

About Jeonju Int’l Sori Festival

The Jeonju Int'l Sori Festival is an international music festival that showcases various traditional music from the world and present Korean traditional music including Pansori which has been registered as a Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO, and promotes exchange among them.

The Jeonju Int'l Sori Festival founded in 2001. It has done its best not only to bring out the real value of Korean traditional music of today, but also preserving its original forms, and dream the tomorrow through creative challenges and collaboration with other genres.


Every fall, Jeonju was known as the most Korean city resonates with the Sori(meaning of the Sound of Voice and Music) from all over the world. The festival presents the grand gala concert for opening and closing, outdoor stage of the invited artist from Korea and the world, and various programs for the audience such as Master Classes, World Music Workshops, and Kid & Famaily program.


Jeonju Int'l Sori Festival won the Best Festival Awards by TWMC Festival Awards 2018 and has been chosen as one of '25 of the Best World Music Festivals' by Songlines well-known British world music magazine, which means that it is becoming a world-level festival beyond that of Jeollabuk-do, or Korea.

 

What does the program offer?

We will provide:

       International round-trip airfare between your country and Korea(economy)

       Accommodation was located in Jeonju, Jeollabuk-do Province for staying of residency

       Research and living expenses KRW900000 per month for staying of residency

       Education program of Korea traditional music theory and instrument

       Cultural tour program to know Korean arts and culture

       Korean language class for artist’s research activities

       Studio for co-producing and rehearsal

       Opportunities of performance at Jeonju Intl’ Sori Festival 2019

       Support of the team of Jeonju Intl’ Sori Festival, which will help the production process

       Opportunities of building international network among Asian artists


What is your role and mission of this project?

All artists of this project should:

       Participate in all programs from 1st week of August to 2nd week of November in Jeonju.

       Individual and group research for new production

       Co-produce the new production

       Master Class of Korean music theory and instrument lessons

       Specialized Korean language course for residency program

       Perform at Jeonju Int’l Sori Festival 2019 to premiere the new production

       Perform at other festival or concert hall were organized by festival committee

       Submit the artist report before leaving Korea

       Workshop and network meeting with local artist


Who can apply?

We are looking for artists who are:

       Professional musicians from Indonesia, India, Mongolia, Vietnam, and  Armenia

       String, Winds, and Percussion musicians were based traditional music of Indonesia, India, and Vietnam 

          Duduk musician from Armenia

       Professional musicians who was born from 1975 to 1999 and continued artistic work over five years

          No applicable student who is on the bachelor's degree.

       Open to international collaboration and willing to encounter the new music and culture

       English or Korean speaker was enough to do international co-work

       available to stay in Korea from 1st week of August to the 2nd week of November 2019

   We do not provide any feedback your application. Only your applying status checking available.

   All notice of each process will be individually.


Schedules

       Application will close by 7th of June 2019

       On-line interview on the 2nd week of June 2019

       Arrival in Korea by the 1st week of August 2019

       Premier performance between 2nd and 6th of October at Sori festival

       Departure from Korea at the 2nd week of November

   All schedules and conditions can be changeable up to local circumstance.
