Seven Korean men create today's sarangbang (salon to receive guests in traditional houses) with a fun, liberating taking on male/female roles defined by our times, combining Gyeonggi minyo (Korean traditional folk music) and jazz: Lee Heemoon, extraordinary minyo singer whose performance never fails to surprise us; jazz band Prelude - Choi Jinbae (music director/bass), Ko Heean (piano), Richard Rho (tenor saxophone) and Han Woongwon (drums); and exciting minyo duo Nomnom (Shin Seungtae and Jo Wonseok; chorus/comedy acts 'jaedam'). Along with the perfect musical harmony of East and West and reinterpretation of 9 kinds of minyo including jabga (more popularized form of minyo), each number is assigned with a visual idea, unique storytelling and performance. By rearranging 'jabga' – a challenging genre to perform which doesn't have clear melodic structure- with jazz vocabularies, they're discovering a musical apparatus that clearly portrays the sensibilities of jabga. Bluesy arrangement of a mournful song, 'A Widow's Prayer,' maximizes the feeling of sadness; 'Cloudy Days in June and July' about a young servant is arranged in swing style, making the character come alive and humorously satirize his times. Showing creative energy and virtuosity, they are acclaimed as "the best possible collaboration" and "new iconic musical language integrating the essential sentiments and musicality of minyo and jazz."
