A Series of Korean Gut(Shamanistic healing ritual)

Unlike in the past, gut music has lately been given lots of attention as it has anthropological, cultural, and artistic values, containing Korean tradition beyond simple shaman activities. Now it is understood as a kind of traditional music that could be considered its own music genre. This year, the Sori Festival will highlight five gut musical performances representing five different regions across five days.

Byeolsin-gut of the south coast (The National Intangible Heritage 82-4)

A special gut stage with archetypal values and the best artists

This has been inherited as a communal ritual in farming and fishing villages of some islands of the south coast, mostly coming from the area around Tongyeong city of Gyeongsangnam Province. It is also performed in Busan, Masan, Samcheonpo, Namhae, and even in Yeosu, which is in neighboring Jeollanam Province. This type of gut is mostly led by shamans who inherit their roles hereditarily, and its rituals, dance, music, food, and play have developed themselves into a high-quality general theatrical performance. It has been very well preserved and is now highly valued. Led by Jeong Yeongman, a well-respected cultural figure, audience members can enjoy a great gut performance.
