A Series of Korean Gut(Shamanistic healing ritual)

Unlike in the past, gut music has lately been given lots of attention as it has anthropological, cultural, and artistic values, containing Korean tradition beyond simple shaman activities. Now it is understood as a kind of traditional music that could be considered its own music genre. This year, the Sori Festival will highlight five gut musical performances representing five different regions across five days.

Jindo Ssitgim-gut (The National Intangible Heritage 72)

A ritual to link life and death; Bloomed as the essence of traditional arts beyond shamanism

Ssitgim-gut is a type of gut that vents one’s spites of the dead. The most difficult and desperate process in which shamans try to link the living and the dead through their dances and songs does not end by showing human beings’ transcendent attitudes towards death. Rather, it moves onward to attain a surprisingly artistic and thrilling achievement for the audience.
Audience members will completely understand why Jindo Ssitgim-gut represents the essence of traditional arts, encompassing the full range of shamanism.
