A Series of Korean Gut(Shamanistic healing ritual)
Unlike in the past, gut music has lately been given lots of attention as it has anthropological, cultural, and artistic values, containing Korean tradition beyond simple shaman activities. Now it is understood as a kind of traditional music that could be considered its own music genre. This year, the Sori Festival will highlight five gut musical performances representing five different regions across five days.
Gangneung Dano Gut (The National Intangible Heritage 13)
A splendid festival; the core of people’s faith blossoming through plays
In the Dano Festival, which was nearly as exciting and playful as Lunar New Year’s Day and Chuseok, the most important part of the festival was the Dano gut. While the shamans danced and sang, they were accompanied by very complex percussive beats. The musicians encouraged the shaman with loud and strange shouts, which are called ‘barage’ (this means “accompanying beats”), shouts which were in Korean. Similarly, gut music consists of percussion, the shaman’s songs and dances, and the musicians’ performance, all of which come together to make a unique kind of harmonious music.
