A Series of Korean Gut(Shamanistic healing ritual)
Unlike in the past, gut music has lately been given lots of attention as it has anthropological, cultural, and artistic values, containing Korean tradition beyond simple shaman activities. Now it is understood as a kind of traditional music that could be considered its own music genre. This year, the Sori Festival will highlight five gut musical performances representing five different regions across five days.
Baeyeonsin gut of the west coast (The National Intangible Heritage 82-2)
Fantastic art; ardent sori and gestures facing the limitations of life
This performance gives the audience the perfect chance to appreciate the best of the west coast gut, led by Kim Geumhwa, a retainer of Baeyeonsin Gut of the west coast and Daedong gut, and a master gut artist, who is called ‘the national shaman.’ She will be showing the most charismatic shaman dance and sori in the gut world. She has developed simple gut into a kind of cultural art, which gives her audience a unique experience of artistic fantasy and charm. Audiences can experience the ecstasy of true fantasy, through sori and body movements that become more desperate with the finite nature of life while crossing the border between life and death.
